10 Years of Racing on DORADE

The Ancient Mariners Sailing Society (AMSS) September General Meeting on September 7th will feature a presentation by Wayne Ettel, the shipwright whom led the restoration of Chubasco in 2018-2019 completed just in time for the 2019 Transpac. This promises to be a very informative restoration presentation of the type we have not had in a while! Bring your questions.

General Membership Meeting

Where: Outboard Boating Club
Time: 6pm
The October 2023 AMSS General Meeting will feature a presentation by AMSS Staff Commodore Jerry Newton. Jerry, and a group of fellow AMSS members, just returned from the 2023 Port Townsend Wood Boat Festival and Jerry will be showing photos taken by AMSS friend and professional photographer Mark Albertazzi. Please plan to attend this hot off the press presentation by Jerry.

General Membership Meeting

Time: 6pm
The August AMSS General Meeting will be a BBQ held at the Outboard Boating Club of S.D. (OBC) on Shelter Island.
This will be a BRING YOUR OWN event.
Please plan to bring own main dish to grill and beverages with an appetizer or dessert (A-M Dessert, N-Z Appetizer) to share.
AMSS will provide paper plates, napkins, utensils and a cooler of ice.
BBQ's will be available for grilling.
(Alcohol is allowed)

General Membership Meeting
10 Years of Racing on DORADE
When: Thursday, May 11, 2023
Where: Southwestern Yacht Club
Time: 7:00 pm
The May Ancient Mariners Sailing Society General Meeting on May 11th will kick off the 49th Yesteryear Regatta weekend and feature a presentation by Eric Chowanski, a professional sailor that has raced on the 1930 S&S sailing yacht DORADE in nearly every race the yacht has sailed since 2013. Eric, known as “Chewy” is the Bowman on DORADE and will share the many lessons learned running the Bow on DORADE in both classic events and full grand prix events around the world.

General Membership Meeting
​The June General Meeting will be held at Koehler Kraft on Friday, June 17th to help kick off the San Diego Wooden Boat Festival weekend presented by Koehler Kraft. C.F. Koehler will give a look back at the history of the San Diego Wooden Boat Festival and provide a preview of the 2022 Festival.
Prior to C.F.’s presentation please plan to come early for a Mexican Buffet for $10, complemented by your own beverage, from 5:30-7:00 pm. RSVP is required if you plan to attend the Dinner. The event is a fundraiser for the San Diego Sea Scouts so please come support them!

General Membership Meeting

The April AMSS General Meeting will be held at the Silvergate Yacht Club, the hosts of the 35th Annual America’s Schooner Cup, on Friday March 31st at 7:00pm. The featured speaker will be Dr. Ray Ashley and he will give a presentation titled the “History of the Schooner”. This lecture commemorates 35 years of the America’s Schooner Cup on San Diego Bay!

The Restoration of Skookum III

The February 2023 AMSS General Meeting will be a double feature. First up, will be the unveiling of the new AMSS Website by Danielle Richards. Second up, will be a showing of “The Restoration of Skookum III” video by Mark Albertazzi. Mark will be on hand to answer questions about the video as will owner Perc Jones no doubt be able to share some stories about the restoration!

General Membership Meeting

The March 2023 AMSS Meeting features the showing of the video “Steady as she Goes” a video of the 1959 Transpacific Yacht Race from aboard the 161-foot Schooner Goodwill. The Goodwill was the largest yacht to ever compete in the Transpac and this old-school video shows what racing a huge yacht can be like.
AMSS will provide snacks so please be sure to sign-up so appropriate arrangements can be made. Please plan to attend and bring a friend!
